As a pharmacist it is a requirement that you have an enhanced criminal record check completed. This check is in place to ensure it is appropriate for the applicant to work in an environment potentially with vulnerable adults and children.

Your guide to a pharmacist DBS check! DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) helps employers to make safer recruitment decisions and stop unsuitable people from working with vulnerable adults and children.

It is becoming more frequent now that DBS is an essential requirement to working as a locum pharmacist. All the large pharmacy multiples ask for it as part of their registration process.

Employed pharmacists also have a requirement to complete a DBS check for their employer.

Pre-Registration Students

Most universities carry out DBS checks for their students however the validity of these checks ends when the student enters paid work as a pre-registration pharmacist.

DBS Process:

  1. Email info@locatealocum.com to request a pharmacist DBS check.
  2. Our team will email you a secure link to complete the online application.
  3. Complete the secure online payment.
  4. Print your verification form and take it to your nearest Post Office. You will require a minimum of 3 identity documents to prove your identity.
    • You will need to take photocopies of your identity documents, which will be verified against the originals by the post office.
    • The post office will counter sign these photocopies, this is a requirment to prevent fraudulent activity.

DBS Update Service

This service is provided annually and can be of benefit to all pharmacists. By registering with the service, it keeps your certificate valid and ensures employers that your certificate is current and up to date.

FAQ's

  1. How much does it cost to get a pharmacist DBS check through Locate a Locum:

  2. How do I pay for the Pharmacist DBS Check:
    We facilitate payment by the online secure payment portal PayPal after you complete your application. If you do not have a PayPal account, select the option to pay with credit/debit card.
  3. Why do I need to get my documents verified at the Post office?
    Under strict new DBS regulations, they must ensure that documents are not only identity checked but also the individual is checked against the documents provided. Any breach of this will be considered fraudulent activity and will render your DBS check invalid.
  4. How long does the DBS process take?
    DBS state that certificates can take up to 6 weeks however the majority of certificates are processed within only 2 weeks.
  5. Why is the annual update service important?
    It is important to register with the update service within 19 days of receiving your certificate as this allows you to carry your DBS check between employers. The update service is the easiest way for you to have a current, valid and up to date DBS check.

PVG Check For Pharmacists - Scotland

The Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check is a membership scheme set up for 'regulated work' to ensure the protection of vulnerable adults and children. As a pharmacist your job falls into the catergory of regulated work.

How the PVG Scheme Works?

When you apply for your PVG Scheme membership, a criminal record check will be carried out and the results will be available to the applicaple employing organisations.

Once someone has has become a PVG scheme member, you are a member for life unless you decide to leave the scheme, you do not need to renew your membership at any point. Instead, checks will continue to be carried out periodically to ensure your suitability to continue working.

PVG Scheme Process:

  1. All locums and Pre-Reg's, CLICK HERE to visit the PVG Scheme website.
  2. Fill out the online form to have a PVG Scheme application posted to you - PVG applications must be filled out on the requested paper form.
  3. The completed form must be returned to a registered umbrella body such as the Community Pharmacy Scotland (CPS) along with the requested ID to confirm your identity and address.

How Much Does It Cost?

PVG Scheme applications cost £59, this is however a lifetime membership and so a one off payment.

An important aspect to note, is that any changes to your records must be updated, for example a change in name, change of address etc. An update of your scheme records requires an £18 payment.

Payments must be made before sending in your application. Please open the below leaflet from the umbrella body Community Pharmacy Scotland (CPS) where you will find the methods of payment on page 7.

What Now?

When your application to the PVG Scheme has been accepted, you and CPS will be issued with a copy of your certificate. This is your proof of having PVG Scheme membership status and therefore your right to work as a pharmacist with vulnerable children and adults.

AccessNI Check For Pharmacists - Northern Ireland

Your AccessNI check which is basically a criminal record check which is carried out to ensure the protection of vulnerable adults and children. As a pharmacist your job falls into the catergory of regulated work and so you must obtain an enhanced AccessNI certificate in order to practice.

How To Apply

Before beginning your application you will need the following to hand:

In order to work as a Pharmacist you must complete the enhanced application online through a registered body using the provided PIN, you cannot apply online without this PIN.

Steps to completion:
  1. First, you need to create an AccessNI account before you can access the online form. Click here to create your account.
  2. Once you have created your account Click here to log in and begin, or login from the main accessNI site and navigate to 'Apply for Disclosure Certificates' in the main menu. And choose the enhanced option.
  3. The first step of the application form will be to enter the Locate a Locum PIN (476796). Then complete the rest of the form as per the instructions, including providing the stated identification.
  4. When completed, you will see a confirmation message with your case reference number and a link to track the progress of your application. Make note of this number in case you need to ask any questions about your application.

What Now?

After you complete your application it will be forwarded for approval and then to AccessNI for processing. The enhanced AccessNI application costs £48 and you can expect it to take between 10 - 28 days to process and 5 days for your certificate to be issued. You will be able to track its progress from your account online.

This certificate is your proof that an enhanced criminal record check has been carried out and you are verified to work as a pharmacist with vulnerable children and adults.
