What is a Rolling Rota?
Often in Care Homes, staff are required to work flexible hours in order to meet the needs of residents. Rotas are generally ‘3-week rolling’ which means, rotational days off i.e. one weekend off in three and set days off. But how do you set up a rolling rota and make it fair?
Setting up a Rolling Rota?
The first thing you need to do is enter shift types, for instance ‘a long day’ which could be 8 am to 6 pm, then you must make sure that you input the specific job types needed to ensure the smooth running and governance requirements for your care home.
Once all these details are input, in order to ensure fairness you should ask your employees about their availability - but it’s important to keep in mind that not everyone can have the shifts they want, all the time - so rotation of job types may become a necessity.
Once you have a pattern in place, for instance, one staff nurse, three carers, and a senior carer at all times you can input these into your rota. This will be a much simpler task with a digital off-duty.
The Locate a locum platform has ‘copy week’ functionality built in to allow you to easily duplicate working patterns for future weeks in your live rota. This means that if you create an effective rolling rota for 3 weeks, for example, then this is the only time you will need to do it.
You may have to alternate staff with the same job types but this will be admin light in comparison to paper processes related to rota alterations. Locate a Locum’s live rota also has the ability to alert you of any gaps in your rota and ensure you remain compliant at all times.
We recently surveyed over 100 Care Home Managers and have now published a Care Home Managers Report giving an insight into workforce challenges faced by Care Home Managers during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Unsurprisingly, administration tasks were seen as a major factor in increasing stress for care home managers.
