From January 2026, Locate a Locum will introduce automated identity verification in the mobile app using your passport and a selfie.

If you’re not a British or Irish passport holder and you plan to work in the United Kingdom, you will also need a Right to Work Share Code.

This article explains what that means and how to get one.

What is a Share Code?

A Share Code is a short, unique code issued by the UK Home Office. It allows employers to securely check your Right to Work status online.

A Share Code confirms:

  • Your immigration status
  • Whether you’re allowed to work in the UK
  • What type of work you can do
  • How long you’re allowed to work for

Who needs a Share Code?

You only need a Share Code if:

  1. You plan to work in the United Kingdom, and
  2. You do not have a UK or Irish passport

This includes workers with:

  • EU Settled or Pre-Settled Status
  • Work visas (Skilled Worker, Health & Care Worker, etc.)
  • Graduate Visas
  • Student Visas with work permissions
  • Any other immigration status allowing work

If you have a UK or Irish passport, you do not need a Share Code for UK Right to Work.

Why is a Share Code required?

UK law requires non-UK/Irish nationals to use the Home Office online Right to Work system. A Share Code allows us to:

  • Verify your Right to Work
  • Ensure your status is valid and up to date
  • Prevent delays and manual document checks

You’ll be prompted automatically in the Locate a Locum app if we need your Share Code.

How do I get a Share Code?

You can get a Share Code by following the steps below.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to “Prove your Right to Work to an employer” on GOV.UK
  2. Sign in using one of the following:
    • Your BRP/BRC/visa details
    • Your biometric passport
    • Your UKVI account
  3. Select “Share Code for Work”
  4. Your code will be generated instantly
  5. Copy the code and enter it into the Locate a Locum app when prompted

Share Codes are valid for 90 days.

What information does the Share Code show?

When your code is checked, the Home Office provides:

  • Your name and identity details
  • Your immigration status
  • Your work permissions (including any restrictions)
  • Expiry dates or limits on your right to work

No sensitive immigration history is shared.

What you’ll need when our automated identity verification launches

If you’re working in the UK and you’re not a British/Irish passport holder, you will need:

  • A valid passport (any nationality)
  • A Share Code
  • A smartphone to complete verification in the Locate a Locum app

The app will guide you through every step.

Summary

  • Share Codes are required only for non-UK/Irish nationals working in the UK.
  • They confirm your Right to Work through the Home Office system.
  • You can get one quickly online.
  • The Locate a Locum app will automatically prompt you when you need to provide it.

This ensures a faster, safer, more accurate onboarding process so you can start booking shifts sooner.
