As a locum optometrist adaptability must be part of your toolkit as you will often be working in a different practices for your locum shifts.. This means locum optometrists need to be able to shift seamlessly between different technology, processes and team dynamics.

Optometry Today has asked industry experts and locum optometrists for their advice on how locums can best market their skillset. We've put together their responses below.

1. Finding and keeping work

Aberdeen-based locum, Craig McCoy, shared that when he started as a locum, he sent letters to independent practices in the region where he was working. As a locum optometrist with us you won't need to do this as Locate a Locum has the largest selection of locum optometry shifts available in the UK. You can view them here.

Locum work by nature allows you to gain valuable experience as you will be working within diverse teams and communities nationwide. It is encouraged that you gain skills in various aspects of optometry to support your knowledge base. Locuming as an optometrist is also a great way of building an excellent reputation in the field.

2. Upskilling and specialising

For locum optometrist, Rebecca Rushton, lockdown resulted in several months without income. She used the time to "re-think [her] strategy" by upskilling and specialising. Rebecca also utilised her LinkedIn profile to secure work. We've created a blog on the benefits of adding Locate a Locum as your employer on LinkedIn as it highlights that you're connected to a platform where you can readily apply for shifts, you can read the full blog here.

3. Connecting with permanent team members

Many of the respondents stated that connecting with team members was also essential to build a productive working environment. As a locum optometrist you will have to deal with diverse teams in each practice, it is best to offer support and guidance where you can so you can receive it in return.

One of the respondenst stated, “I make every effort to try to get to know the staff and introduce myself to each member. I often find that works well and eases you into the day,”.

One great tip we often hear from our more experienced locums is to ring the store before your shift. Just a quick 10 minute phone call to the opticians the day before your shift leaves a fantastic impression. It also gives you the opportunity to find your feet and ask any questions you may have - particularly if you have never been to this store before. You can find out if they specialise in certain areas of optics or if there will be a higher volume of contact lens work than normal etc.
